Functions of S-type load cells

S-type load cells are particularly suitable for measuring tensile forces, but can also be used to measure compressive forces. As the name suggests, these load cells have a typical S-type. In the middle beam of this S is the so-called spring body of the load cell. This is a piece of metal that deforms under pressure and returns to its original shape when the pressure is removed. This deformation process, which is defined by the physical properties, is measured by a strain gauge attached to the metal, and electrical signals are generated from this change. In the case of the S-type load cell, the spring body is deformed by tension or pressure at both ends. In contrast to other load cells, the S-type load cell is not calibrated exclusively in weight units. They can also be used as force sensors and are then calibrated accordingly in Newtons.

Areas of application

S-type load cells are found in weighing devices for small to medium load ranges up to one ton. S-type load cells are used in hybrid scales, silo scales, crane scales, big-bag scales or hanging container scales, among other things. When used as force transducers, they are also found in tensile force testing machines or in material fatigue testing systems. Tensile force sensor. Tensile force load cell.

Technical Details

S-type load cells are used in the industrial sector, which is reflected in the requirements regarding robustness. S-type load cells meet the requirements for protection class IP 65 to IP69k (protection against the ingress of dust and against splash water, heavy splash water or submersion). The S-type load cells are selected according to the parameters specified in the data sheet, such as nominal load, breaking or limit load and minimum division value. When used as a force transducer, these load specifications are given in Newtons. These values help the designer of a weighing device to calculate the measurement accuracy or the permissible tare weight. A S-type load cell should always be verifiable, since most weighing devices are subject to calibration.
