Joining, riveting, punching, bending, welding... the applications of presses in joining, separating, and forming technology are diverse and constantly find new uses. With sensor and measurement technology from octogon, force measurement can be reliably implemented. Whether as a conventional force sensor in the force flow or as a strain gauge on the machine frame. Our sensor technology allows processing forces to be measured directly in the tool. Corresponding measuring amplifiers, cable sets, and accessories are, of course, also available from us. octogon measurement systems make the testing and calibration of presses simple.

Press ram block converted into a force transducer with display

 

Such an octogon measurement system was also used in the project with RHI Magnesita , the world market leader for refractory products and solutions. To record the pressing forces, a so-called ram block of a press, which serves as a spacer between the upper punch and the pressing tool, was converted into a force measurement sensor. The pressing force – in addition to the tool and the material used – is crucial for the quality of the pressed part. The hydraulic pressure is not an optimal variable for process control here. This created a way to infer the pressing density of the pressed material. With this measurement system, it will be possible in the future to control the process in such a way that only pressed material with the correct pressing density is produced. This can drastically reduce rejects and eliminate incorrectly pressed material from the production process at an early stage.

To achieve the set goals, RHI Magnesita relies on the expertise and the highly dynamic and reliable measurement technology from octogon.

 

 

FEM analysis to determine the strain gauge position on the ram block

 

In this project, particular attention was paid to the simulation of the basic geometry and its improvement. Through numerous simulation and iteration processes, the desired properties with regard to stress homogeneity and compensation behavior could be optimized.

The ram block was then equipped with strain gauges (strain gauge application) and with measurement electronics 

At RHI Magnesita, the ram block was calibrated and adjusted with a force measuring cell from octogon.

With this measurement system, it is now possible to record measurement data for each pressing process and each individual pressed part. This allows for conclusions to be drawn about the pressing density of the pressed part and rejects to be detected early.
