Strain gauge application on the mobile racking system in the deep-freeze area

 

Challenge:

The particular challenge here lay in the low temperatures (-30 °C) and the harsh environmental conditions for the sensors and their commissioning. For a large cold storage warehouse with high-bay racking, octogon developed and designed a measuring system to monitor floor loads and running rails during operation.

The data obtained can be used to draw conclusions about the loading condition (overload or uneven loading) of the individual rack rows. This results in a reduction of failure and downtime as well as maintenance costs.

The high-bay warehouse consists of 12 rails on which 10 high-bay racks can be moved to save space.

Up to 4000 tons of frozen goods are stored here at -30°C on 4000m2.

A total of 120 measuring points were installed throughout the high-bay warehouse to monitor the rails for deflection.

 

 

 

 

Evaluation of the strain measurement on the mobile racking system

 

 

 Measurements:

Temporary measurements were used to create a load profile of the rails on which the racks move. The edge fiber stresses of the rails when driven over were measured at 120 measuring points using strain gauges. These measurements were repeated several times. In the end, several strains/stresses could be determined. The most important question/concern for our customer was to determine whether the rails of the high-bay warehouse had detached from the concrete and thus whether the warehouse was damaged. We were able to rule this out with the measurements carried out. Our results were confirmed by core drillings carried out later.
Instead, we found excessively high surface pressure between rails and rollers.
In addition, differences in floor deflection were observed, which suggested an inhomogeneous floor structure. Since this should not actually be possible according to the construction plan, core drillings were carried out at these points. The problem was then identified: water had penetrated the floor insulation and frozen.
