Which digit height do I need for which reading distance?
The larger the digits, the further the display can be read – manufacturers state a maximum reading distance for each device in the data sheet, and that is the figure to go by. Viewing angle, ambient light and contrast shift the result considerably; direct sunlight shortens the distance noticeably. If in doubt, take the next larger digit height.
Where does a large display get its value from?
From a weighing transmitter or indicator over a serial link or a fieldbus, or directly from the control system. As a rule the display does not calculate, it displays. That is why it must be clear before purchase which protocol the feeding device speaks – a retrofit fails on that more often than on the display itself.
Which protection rating does a display in a hall need?
In a dry hall IP54 is enough. In damp or dusty surroundings IP65 is appropriate, for cleaning with a water jet IP66 or higher, and in wet areas with wash-down a stainless steel version with IP69K. Outdoors, UV resistance and the temperature range come in as requirements of their own.
